Grapevine Historical Society Celebrates the 50s, Raises Funds for New Museum (Photo Gallery)

Grapevine’s Palace Arts Center was a hoppin’ joint on Friday, Sept. 28. Cool cats and dressed-up dolls shook, rattled and rolled the night away while raising money for the Grapevine Historical Society’s new museum fund.

Attendees were decked out in poodle skirts and leather jackets for the occasion. Grapevine Historical Society Historian Joe Ann Standlee knit nine poodle skirts for the event.

The evening kicked off at 6:30 p.m., and the hip guests were treated to hamburgers, root beer floats served in a souvenir mug, hors d’oeuvres, a chocolate fountain and a cash bar.

“We’re busting at the seams,” said Duff O’Dell, member of the Grapevine Historical Society. “The museum allows us to show great artifacts and leave a piece of Grapevine for families and kids.”

At 8 p.m., the guests were treated to a 50s sock hop show presented by the DFW All-Stars Musical Review. Attendees revisited the hand jive and sang along with performances of songs from Elvis, Ray Charles and other 50s artists.

“We’re looking forward to the grand opening of our new museum,” said Helen Jean Lucas Reed, corresponding secretary for the Grapevine Historical Society. “We’ve been collecting money since February for it, and Grapevine is known for its history, so donations are much appreciated.”
